Academy of Art University Celebrates 90 Years of Relevance with Communications & Media Technologies

As Academy of Art University celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2019, it is proud to showcase its own School of Communications & Media Technologies as just one example of how it continues to provide cutting-edge and relevant arts education for creatives from around the world.

What Academy of Art University Stands For

Academy of Art University was founded by Richard S. Stephens, a fine art painter and creative director for Sunset Magazine, in 1929. Within just a few years, Stephens added more faculty to the school, with one driving principle — every faculty member would be a practicing creative, gainfully employed in current art and design work. To this day, Academy instructors are working creatives who bring their ample industry experience into the classroom, along with their artistic and business expertise.

Over the past 90 years, that focus has allowed the school to train some of the most talented and sought-after creative experts in a host of different artistic fields. When Richard’s son, Dr. Richard A. Stephens, assumed the leadership of the school, the student population grew to over 5,000 as bachelor and graduate degree programs were added in a growing list of artistic specialties.

Now under the leadership of Dr. Elisa Stephens, the granddaughter of our founder, the Academy has continued to pioneer new avenues of instruction and degree programs to benefit aspiring artists and designers from around the world. The campus is located in downtown San Francisco, which lends a certain creative flavor all its own. Students can live on campus or take classes online while pursuing their degrees in over 30 areas of professional study. Up to five different levels of degrees are granted in most of these programs.

The School of Communications & Media Technologies

At the School of Communications & Media Technologies, highly experienced and talented faculty members introduce and utilize the latest technologies to instruct students on every multimedia communications platform. From broadcast and streaming to mobile and social, students will shoot, edit, and produce stories that inform, entertain, and engage. This unique hands-on approach at Academy of Art University means that students acquire skills by practicing them in real-world situations. There is a dual emphasis on interpersonal and mass communication, as well as a focus on skills that are immediately employable. Students plan and produce their own content, including online series, music videos, podcasts, broadcast productions, and motion graphics.

Students can earn a BA or MA in one of five primary disciplines:

  • Business of Media
  • In-Depth Project: Studio Entertainment Series
  • Media Specialties
  • Performance
  • Visualization and Effects

Throughout their student journey, students at the Academy work with the latest software and equipment, gaining valuable knowledge and experience on tools that they will use in their professional careers. The Academy’s curriculum incorporates current advancements in media technologies and industry practices so that their students emerge well-versed in the latest methods used by media and communications professionals — thus giving their students a distinct advantage after graduation.
