Choosing a place of study that will be the best fit for you is a challenge all students face. High school is nearing completion and adulthood looms. Paired with a sense of excitement and adventure is a nagging fear about choosing the wrong place. Wouldn’t it be great to actually follow a student around for a day or so at one of your college choices, just to get a feel for the people, places, and atmosphere you would encounter as a student?
Academy of Art University student, Sam Bear shared a typical day of study in the School of Motion Pictures and Television. The video below follows Sam’s day from waking alarm to turning out the light as he hangs out with friends, attends classes, and studies.
Sam Bear – A Day in the Life
Here’s a snapshot of what he shares from a day of life at the Academy of Art University.
Sam rises early (for a college student) at 9 am to prepare for his day in his room at the Commodore Dormitory. Originally built in 1928 as a merchant seaman hotel, the Commodore is one of 15 residence facilities for the Academy of Art University. It is a freshman residence facility featuring Neo-Deco styling, located in the heart of downtown San Francisco at the foot of Nob Hill.
He discusses that he chose Academy of Art University because he wanted to learn a solid platform for all aspects of film making.
Nearby is an Academy of Art University shuttle stop where Sam hops a free ride to all campus locations by simply showing his student ID. Living and traveling through downtown San Francisco provides students a taste and feel for the vibrancy of the city. New and old buildings mix together with a variety of city residents, street art, and beautiful weather to form a backdrop conducive to artistic pursuits. Academy of Art University is proud to call San Francisco home, and the energy and distinctive flair of the city culture definitely makes an impact.
Sam participates in two different classes in the School of Motion Pictures and Television, each spaced far enough apart to allow for study, project collaborations, and relaxation. At 11 am, he attends his first class, Production Design, where students focus on the varying components of production such as costumes, props, and sets. Classes provide the opportunity for Sam to share his work and be challenged and encouraged by his professors and peers. Sam is building relationships that will become pivotal assets in his future creative career, and time to work together and just hang out is time well spent. At 3 pm, he heads to Directing Actors Class, a collaborative class where students work together. Sam notes today’s session was one of the best he and his group have had. Within just a few weeks, he can see a noticeable difference.
Academy of Art University has state of the art facilities including libraries, lounges, classrooms, and studios. Sam also spends time hanging out with friends, meeting his own needs, and sharing creative ideas and work at some of the Campus Cafes located around the city. Each café offers a unique atmosphere and a wide variety of food choices at differing times for busy students. More than just a place to eat, the Academy of Art University cafes are designed to offer students a collaborative haven in which to mix with other students and share dreams, ideas, and work. He ends his day chilling with his friends back at his dorm.
Be sure to read Sam’s own blog post about his day and view the accompanying video where he shares more of his thoughts and feelings about the Academy of Art University. His own summary says it best, “Did I make the right decision in choosing to study at the Academy of Art University? 100 percent yes.”
Choosing a place of study is one of the most critical decisions young students will ever make. Every opportunity for gathering information and experiences from different colleges and universities should be taken. Sam appreciates it’s uniqueness, “One of the most rewarding things about AAU is its amazing students.” Not many places provide a means for prospective students to follow an actual first-year student through their normal day and hear their thoughts about the decision they made. Academy of Art University provides you an invaluable glimpse into the life and thoughts of a freshman creative student as he lives his life on campus. Sam Bear chose to prepare for his artistic career at the Academy of Art University, and he’s glad that he did.
Academy of Art University is Where You Begin
Academy of Art University has been investing in the lives of young creatives since 1929. The only privately-owned art institution in the United States, the Academy of Art University was founded and is still guided by the Stevens family. Original founder Richard S. Stephens was a fine art painter and Creative Director for Sunset Magazine. His son, Dr. Richard A. Stephens, led the school to begin offering bachelor’s and graduate degrees, growing to a student enrollment of over 5,000. Current President, Dr. Elisa Stephens, is the granddaughter of Richard S. Stephens, and she has continued to expand the Academy’s depth, scope, and quality of education. Under her leadership, the Academy of Art College became the Academy of Art University in 2004.
Students now have the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Architecture, Associate of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Architecture, Art Teaching Credential, certificate programs, and continuing art education courses in 28 areas of study. Courses are offered both on-campus and online, with some of the most advanced and state-of-the-art equipment and technology available.
From its inception, the Academy of Art University has engaged the services of professors and instructors who are themselves actively working creatives in their chosen field. With the continually evolving nature of the arts, students need a foundation of creative history and thinking combined with the latest trends in every field of artistic expression. Students grow under the tutelage of working professionals who hold significant credits in major artistic industries. Their experience and industry connections are invaluable to students as they prepare for and launch creative careers.
