Attending a university is a dream for many students and their parents. The excitement brought on by an acceptance letter, choosing a major, and walking down the aisle to get their degree is unparalleled for most.
However, many bright students and their loved ones struggle with the concept of paying for college. They may be discouraged from choosing a degree they are passionate about in favor of a more traditional one. Many students even fail to attend college at all because of the cost.
However, Academy of Art University is seeking to change the financial burden of college and provide students with a way to study what they love. Through their financial aid program, students and their families find that college can be affordable and allows them to pursue the arts without falling even deeper into debt passionately.
Here’s what you need to know about Academy of Art University and the financial aid options that can help make college a reality.

Financial Aid Opportunities
Students that fill out their FAFSA may be eligible for Financial Aid through the federal government. U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens can apply to get different types of aid. They take into account several factors, including family income, to decide which financial aid each student is eligible for.
Federal financial aid comes in either the form of a loan or a grant. Loans are paid back after leaving school, while grants are money to keep for school.
The kinds of federal aid include:
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
The FSEOG is a grant that most students do not have to pay back. Funding is limited for this grant, though, so students should apply as early as possible to make sure that they can qualify for it. Not every college participates in the FSEOG programs, but Academy of Art University does.
Another grant for undergraduate students is money for college that students typically don’t have to repay. The Department of Education looks at the FAFSA to determine whether students can qualify for this type of grant, as well as several factors.
Direct Stafford Loans
Federal student loans do require students to pay them back after they leave school. They typically have a lower interest rate than a conventional student loan, which makes them ideal for many students. They come in two different types, subsidized and unsubsidized. Subsidized loans do not accrue interest while the student is enrolled in a certain amount of units, while unsubsidized does accrue interest.
CAL is a financial aid program that is administered by the California Student Aid Commission. It provides financial aid to select undergraduate, vocational, and training students. It requires students to meet a specific grade point average and parent income requirements. Students can file through FASFA or through a California Dream application between October 1, and March 2nd every year to see if they qualify. There are a few main tiers students can qualify for.
You can find out more by checking out the Department of Education website.
Direct ParentPlus Loan
These are loans from the Department of Education that parents can take out on behalf of an eligible dependent student. Like the Stafford loans, these must be repaid after graduation.
States provide financial aid options, as well. Each state has its own eligibility requirements and aid offered, so students should look up what is available in their state.
California residents are eligible to receive a CAL Grant from the California Student Aid Commission. However, there are certain requirements, and students must submit a FAFSA for the Commission to determine whether they are eligible.
