New Smartphone Designed To Securely Store Cryptocurrencies Becomes Available

On Tuesday, a German cyber security company called Sikur launched a smartphone specifically crafted to keep cryptocurrencies safe.

Sikur unveiled the $799 device, called the SIKURPhone, at the World Mobile Conference, which is being held in Barcelona, Spain. Many of its features are similar to those you would expect in a smartphone, such as 5.5″ Gorilla Glass display, 64 GB of storage, 4 GB of RAM, and two cameras: a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel front one. It also has a 2800 mAh battery and fingerprint authentication.

But what makes the phone stand out is that it comes with a state-of-the-art cryptocurrency wallet built in. A wallet is what secures digital currencies such as bitcoin, which is of special importance to a cryptocurrency user, especially in light of all the theft associated with the currencies. If a thief is able to break into a cryptocurrency wallet, all its money is lost and untraceable.

The phone also runs its own version of Android, and applications must pass a thorough vetting process before being able to be installed on the device.

The worldwide craze for cryptocurrencies has created a combined market value of more than $450 billion, up from a little more than $20 billion a year ago. But all that value means nothing if the currencies cannot be secured. According to Sikur, the company hired a slew of professional hackers to attack the phone over the course of a two month testing period. But none of them were able to break into the phone and steal any information from it.

Cristiano Lop, who is the CEO of Sikur, said that by the middle of this year the company will deliver a device-independent wallet, which will bring the technology to devices other than smartphones.

This is not the first security-focused smartphone the company has released. Back in 2015, they offered the Granite Phone to much fanfare.

The company says that SIKURPhone is available for preorders starting today, and that they will be begin delivering the devices this August. They further said that only 20,000 units will be available at the $799 price.
